Cancer Survival Center Overview
Thompson Cancer Network – our region’s only cancer network – is a well-established program with a legacy of bringing innovative cancer “firsts” to our region for more than 25 years. The cornerstone of the network is Thompson Cancer Survival Center, which is committed to excellence in the communities we serve and to delivering advanced cancer care, with our patients at the center of everything we do.
Thompson Cancer Survival Center was one of the first facilities in the world to treat patients with intensity-modulated radiation therapy. The Center’s downtown location houses a Gamma Knife, which was the first advanced radiosurgery system in Tennessee. Thompson’s Center of Excellence for the treatment of Barrett’s esophagus has introduced new endoscopic treatments and developed new optical technologies for non-invasive detection of cancer and dysplasia. Photodynamic therapy for Barrett’s esophagus with high grade dysplasia was pioneered in 1990 at our laser center, which was also one of the first institutions to introduce radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for treatment of Barrett’s esophagus.
Thompson’s leading cancer specialists include three surgical oncologists, nine medical oncologists and seven radiation oncologists who promote the most advanced treatment available for our patients. They are supported by a comprehensive team of dietitians, genetics counselors, physicists, pharmacists, therapists, technologists, oncology nurses, patient navigators, social workers and many others.
